About

NewBrese Dance is a physical dance theatre performance project under the direction of Rachel Calabrese and Sawyer Newsome. Rachel and Sawyer are both graduates of Mason Gross School of the Arts with a BFA in dance performance. They have choreographed work on Wasatch Contemporary Dance Company for their spring 2021 season where their work, Volition, received the Extraordinary Artist Award for Exceptional Artistry and Innovation.

NewBrese dance was adjudicated as Emerging Choreographers in 2021 for Eisenhower Dance Detroit’s NewDANCEfest festival in Detroit, Michigan and again in 2022 for Water Street Dance Festival in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

They have presented their ongoing works throughout NY, NJ, and PA at The Craft NYC, Gowanus Arts Annex, SMUSH Gallery, TADA! Theater, AceHotel, Dixon Place, and many more.

NewBrese dance aims to explore the physicality of movement and how its momentum can be the driving force behind each impulse. Striving to find the raw connection of movement and mind, a high intensity is found within their work that touches upon the issues within relationships, our identity of self, and our identity within society.

Our Mission

DSC_2297 (2).jpg

Our mission is to create a space for ourselves and our company to share our stories and experiences through the lens of movement. We want to construct an intimate environment for our audience, allowing them the space to lean in to our narratives.

When we go into the studio to create work, we rely heavily on opening up  discussions with our dancers on the themes we are wanting to explore. We love the process of improvisation and collaboration to create choreography that way our works have the artistry of our dancers. Recently, what has led our movement investigations are the idea of multiverse theory, warped sensations of reality, and character development. How can we show whatever character we are trying tp convey evolving yet simultaneously de-escalating?

We strive to push the boundaries of physical floorwork and partnering within our work and like finding new ways to test the boundaries of body and mind.

We have been interested in starting to explore how to make our work more immersive- to bring the audience a bit closer into the experience. We want the audience to be able to "lean in" to our work and go on a journey with us.
